You’re not alone and you matter! September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and we want to briefly share some important campus resources if you or someone you know is struggling.
Counseling Center After Hours Line: Need to talk in the middle of the night or on the weekend? Call the Counseling Center’s main number, press 1 and you will be connected to a licensed therapist. The after-hours crisis counselor is available when the Counseling Center is closed: 305-284-5511
JCS Helpline Services: Local 24hr hotline that assists in suicide prevention as well as information and referrals to health, social, and human services: 2-1-1
ULifeline - A nationwide 24hr service that forwards your call to the nearest crisis hotline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255)
Additionally, you can set up a scheduled appointment with the counseling center: Call 305-284-5511 during regular business hours to schedule a “Brief Assessment Appointment”. During this meeting, you can provide an overview of your concerns and move forward to an “Initial Session” with a Counselor or Psychiatrist.
Beginning on September 15 and ending October 25, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the culture, contributions, and history of Hispanic and Latino Americans. The dates were chosen to coincide with the independence days of several Central and South American countries, including Mexico.
In Miami, celebrations come alive through concerts, film festivals, and cultural exhibitions. Showcasing the city’s vibrant Hispanic and Latin communities, the festivities feature traditional dance and music performances, authentic cuisine, and special programs for both residents and visitors.
This month, Miami invites everyone to experience the richness of Hispanic and Latin culture. Below is a list of events happening in Miami and the surrounding areas:
September 13th: Puerto Rican Night with the Marlins
September 16th: Mexican Independence Day Celebration at noon at the Stephen P. Clark Center
October 5th: Hispanic Heritage Community Celebration from 2pm - 6pm at Country Village Park, 6650 NW 188th Terrace
October 11th: Mi Libro Hispano Book Fair from noon - 5:30pm at 9445 Coral Way

Psychological science is the scientific study of the mind, brain, and behavior. Researchers and practitioners (like us!) hope to better understand how people think, feel, and act, in addition to how these processes both influence and are influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. The field is made up of various sub-disciplines, including cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, clinical psychology, and neuroscience, each focusing on different aspects of human experience and behavior. Here at the PRIDE Lab, we most often rely on social and clinical approaches.

Psychological researchers conduct empirical studies, using methods such as experiments, observations, and surveys to gather data, test hypotheses, and develop theories. This research can inform business, medical, government, and legal professions on healthy working and social environments as a means to support human life and development.
